December 29, 2009

According the Wall Street Journal, LIBOR rates for the US Dollar, British Pound Sterling, and the Euro remained stable. LIBOR stands for London Interbank Offered Rate and is a filtered average of rates that banks charge each other for unsecured, short-term loans.

At press time, LIBOR rates for the key currencies:

  • 3-month US Dollar LIBOR: 0.25063%, unchanged from previous
  • 3-month Sterling LIBOR: 0.60500%, a slight rise
  • 3-month Euro LIBOR: 0.66063%, a slight decline

The US Dollar LIBOR rate is only fractionally above the upper range of the historically low federal funds rate of 0% to 0.25%. The Federal Reserve announced in December that it would keep the federal funds rate at this level, citing a gradual economic recovery and the absence of inflation.
