According to The Wall Street Journal, Bharti Airtel is seeking a multi-billion dollar loan with rates based on LIBOR, the London Interbank Offered Rate. LIBOR is a filtered average of rates that banks charge each other for unsecured, short-term loans.
Bharti Airtel is hoping to raise $7 billion to finance the acquisition of assets from Kuwait’s Mobile Communications Co. The company’s target interest rate is LIBOR plus 225 basis points. The Wall Street Journal cites experts who say that the company will most likely end up paying a higher margin above LIBOR. Bharti Airtel began loan negotiations at a proposed interest rate of LIBOR plus 300 points. Finalization of its LIBOR-based loan is expected by March 25.
