About LIBOR and LIBORATED.com |
Hello, I’m Jason Karpf, editor of LIBORATED.com. I’d like to take a moment to tell you about our site and how it can help you track and understand what’s been called the most important number in the world: LIBOR.
LIBOR is an index used to set the rates for over 300 trillion dollars in financial products from mortgages, car loans and student loans to complex instruments such as interest rate swaps and futures contracts.
LIBOR stands for London Interbank Offered Rate. It’s a filtered average of rates that a sample group of banks charge each other for short-term, unsecured loans. LIBOR comes in 15 maturities, from overnight to one year, and is measured in 10 currencies. The BBA—the British Bankers’ Association—compiles and publishes LIBOR each business day.
LIBOR acts as a financial barometer. When banks are feeling optimistic about the market, they charge their brother banks less interest when lending them money. In turn, LIBOR goes down. When banks are less certain or pessimistic, such as during the 2008 financial crisis, they charge more for interbank loans, which is reflected in higher LIBOR rates.
LIBOR has an immediate impact on the financial world and a broad spectrum of borrowers, from huge corporations to college students financing their education. If you have a loan with rates based on LIBOR, you’ll want to follow LIBOR.
At LIBORATED.com, you can track LIBOR, learn about LIBOR, and learn about loans and credit programs tied to the index. LIBOR-based loans can be an excellent means of leverage, risk management, and controlling cash flow. But remember that LIBOR-based loans are adjustable or hybrids that are fixed for a period of time and then adjust. Payments can vary.
Each business day, we post 150 new LIBOR rates—every maturity and currency transmitted directly from the BBA. We also feature background information and news on LIBOR. Our case studies and editorials show how LIBOR-based loans can benefit you when buying a home or financing a small business. Visit LIBORATED.com often to view the latest rates and read new articles about LIBOR and its role in lending.
We believe in financial literacy and intelligent borrowing as part of a wealth management strategy. We call this state “being LIBORATED.”
We are LIBORATED.com, the Web site dedicated to LIBOR, the world’s most important financial gauge. Find out why it’s important to you.
